So, I've been away for a while. Here's a sad little break-up mix someone asked me to make. I hope it does you good, even if only music-wise.

So a few people have been asking for mixes. Here's the least specific "theme" and the, so far, easiest to do. Image leads to the download link. Here's a track listing:

  1. Our Life is Not a Movie Or Maybe, Okkervil River.
It was your heart hurting, but not for too long, kid.

  2. Baby, We'll Be Fine, The National.
All we've gotta do is be brave & be kind. I'm so sorry for everything.

  3. Lost Cause, Beck.
Is that what you thought love was for?

  4. the rest.Collapse )

goodbye, lissome
a mix for leave-taking, with or without permission

voxtrot - stephen
you'll never harbor someone like me
if you'll never leave then you'll never see
i swear that i will pull you from the wreckage
of this sunday - monday routine

&

stars - romantic comedy
you think you're so bad but you're just badly raised
(don't walk away then turn & say "i love you anyway")

&

liz phair - fuck & run
whatever happened to a boyfriend?
the kind of guy who makes love 'cause he's in it

&

the sundays - here's where the story ends
it's that little souvenir of a terrible year
that makes my eyes feel sore
& whoever would've thought that the books that you brought
were all i loved you for?

&

elliott smith - waltz #2 (xo)
i'm so glad that my memory's remote
because i'm doing just fine,
hour to hour, note to note

&

beirut - my wife, lost in the wild
you'll send your odds to me
where will i be?

&

eggboy - just can't let you stay
leave it on until the dawn breaks away
i just can't let you stay

&

wilco - i am trying to break your heart
i want to glide through those brown eyes dreaming
take you from the inside, baby, hold on tight
you were so right when you said i had been drinking
what was i thinking when we said good night?

&

okkervil river - okkervil river song
the water slipped on slowly, past our bodies in the weeds
pulling plastic wrap & razors in its current through the reeds
& i woke up one cold morning, felt an absence at my back
& i searched & stared but only the river stared back

I Hope You Are All Happy Now

it has a nice ring when you laugh
a mix for Valentine's Day 2009: part i

lover • devendra banhart
i wanna be you lover baby, i wanna be your girl, blow a kiss & change the world

A dialogue on this song from SongMeanings.com:
shmortisborg: I think there might be some sexual innuendos in this song.
ohnoodles: innuendos? where?
zzvolcom: The whole song is a sexual innuendo.
now you know. this song is playful & upbeat & trying to sleep with a girl by charming the pants off of her with suggestive metaphors. & when it works, high-fives all around!

el scorcho • weezer
i wish i could get my head out of the sand, 'cause I think we'd make a good team

an oldie, but a goodie. my go-to anthem for every new unrequited attraction. it comes up in my head every single time a new crush happens.

SUP KIDS. 2009, so far, has been a good year for music, I think. Currently been putting Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion on loop. Here are some awesome tracks from that awesome album:
"My Girls"
"Summertime Clothes"

The new Franz Ferdinand album is also pretty good, though I think I might have to give it a closer listen before I say anything else.

Something I also have been putting on loop is Mark Mothersbaugh's score for Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, aptly titled "Nick & Norah's Theme." I have uploaded it for your pleasure and it can be found here: Mark Mothersbaugh: Nick & Norah's Theme. Someone's been hailing it as Motherbaugh's greatest work since "Let Me Tell You About My Boat," off the Zissou soundtrack. I think that's a pretty good description.

Additionally, though it's not really a 2009 release, the rest of the film's soundtrack is awesome. I'm probably going to be using a few tracks off it for future mixes (I don't know; I just have a feeling. And yes, there is going to be a future for this blog, ha!), an obvious choice would be Vampire Weekend's "Ottoman," which was written especially for the movie.

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

DARK WAS THE NIGHT

It's only the greatest compilation ever made. Yep. No big deal. From darkwasthenight.com:
Dark Was The Night will be released on February 17th, 2009. It’s comprised of 31 exclusive tracks and it will be available as a double cd/triple vinyl/download and will benefit the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture. They are the people responsible for albums including No Alternative, Red Hot and Blue and many more, and this is their 20th year, and this is the 20th release!

What's so special, you say? track listing under the cut, created for suspense.Collapse )

Lie to me and tell me that's not impressive. Come on, I dare you.

Preorder ongoing!
via Beggars Group USA
via HMV.com
via play.com

And, to somewhat satiate you, a widget with some samples:

Their MySpace page also samples all tracks, in a sort of countdown 'til February 16, which is when it will be available in stores. The compilation can be bought in CD ($13) or Vinyl ($24) form.

SERIOUSLY. This is why I hate living all across the globe.

Must find a way to preorder. (!)

PS — Mixes coming up, I promise!
